The Bedias Expedition

Thomas Emil Lundblad

In the spring of 1934, Tom Lundblad sent a letter to his cousin-in-law Florence Anderson that was the germ of a plan to take a day trip to visit Flossie. The tale of the resulting trip was written down not long after by Tom in his most eloquent and delightful prose. Below are the first letter and a follow up letter, which you will note is sent only 3 days before they were scheduled to be there! I wish we had Flossie’s replies, but one mustn’t be ungrateful.

Just a note on the documents below: I chose to provide these in their original format, rather than try to transcribe them, because they are just so charming. I love the Humpty Dumpty Groceries letterhead in particular, but all the little corrections and cross-outs just add to the story and my picture of Tom.

In case you are not familiar, my dear, technically challenged readers, just click the link for each of the letters and the story. You should have the option of opening or downloading each one, and reading them that way, or even printing them out. Do let me know if you have any difficulty with anything. I want everyone to be able to enjoy these delightful family treasures.

The correspondence commences, as follows:

Letter Number One April 5th1934

One week later, the planning has been undertaken . . .

Letter Number Two April 12th 1934

And then, just three days later, the Expedition departs!

Feel free to correct me if I have gone astray in any particulars. Also, I will include here a link to a Cast of Characters page that I have been preparing to accompany Lill’s Diary. I have tried to find pictures from as close to the time period as possible. It is, as you will see, still in an early draft form, so please forgive any weirdness.
